The 1822 Capped Bust Dime is the rarest circulation strike issue of the series, with a reported mintage of 100,000 pieces. Some researchers believe that a large portion of this mintage may have actually been for coins dated 1821, making this date even rarer than its mintage suggests. It is estimated that approximately 300 examples exist across all grades with around 20 pieces in uncirculated condition.
The finest known examples are graded MS-66, with one each graded by PCGS and NGC. The NGC MS-66 piece has made several appearances at auction in recent years selling for $79,312.50 in 2012, $70,500 in 2013, and $52,800 in 2018.
